Mr Mc Cullagh
Dear Parents,
Due to the current Coronavirus situation I have enclosed some ideas and activities that you may find helpful over the forthcoming days/weeks.
One of the most important activities that your child could do is – READ! Please encourage him/her to read regularly and on a daily basis. Aim for a minimum of 25-30 minutes per day. Read along with your child and discuss what he/has just read. Talk about the characters, the plot, what has happened in the story, and what might happen next. Allow for associated artwork, create character profiles, blurbs, book reviews etc. Encourage your child to read independently – let him/her create that little quiet reading space where he/she can get lost in that book, in that world full of imagination.
It is important that your child should continue with weekly spellings and I have therefore enclosed a list of spellings that can be tested towards the end of each week. Feel free to appropriately award your child should he/she get all of those spellings correct!!
Within the Numeracy pack that I have sent home there are many worksheets that involve revision of areas of the curriculum that we have already covered. However, if you find that your child is struggling with any particular aspect of these activities then please leave those tasks out. We do not want to cause added stress at this particular time.
I have also included a list of websites that you may find useful; I would like to draw your attention to www.Mathletics.com Many children will be familiar with this website and I hope to set regular tasks that your child may complete in the days and weeks ahead. The children should have received their user-names and passwords within their packs and this will allow them to access their sites. If you encounter any difficulty then please contact the school for further details.
Our topic this term was to be “Ireland – her geography, her history her people and her culture” so why not encourage the children to create their own Ireland topic that might include Artwork factsheets Powerpoints and family quizzes. I have included an Ireland Quiz in the children’s pack just to get you started!
Although it is important that the children use their allocated time productively, please allow for regular breaks and free-time thrown in for good measure.
I realise that this is a very difficult and stressful time for all concerned and I wish you well in the coming days and weeks.
Best Regards
Declan Mc Cullagh
